A Powerful Herb in the Fight Against Cancer

by Christina Blanchard-Horan, PhD

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is a potent medicinal herb traditionally used for its antibacterial and immune-boosting properties. However, recent research suggests that goldenseal may also play a significant role in fighting cancer. The key active compounds in goldenseal, particularly its alkaloids, exhibit strong anticancer properties by targeting cancer cells through multiple mechanisms.

How Goldenseal Fights Cancer

Goldenseal contains powerful alkaloids such as berberine, hydrastine, and canadine, which have demonstrated anticancer potential. These compounds work by:

  • Inhibiting Topoisomerase Enzymes – Cancer cells rely on the enzyme topoisomerase for DNA replication. Goldenseal’s alkaloids inhibit this enzyme, thereby restricting cancer cell proliferation.

  • Inducing Apoptosis (Cell Death) – Alkaloids in goldenseal trigger programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancerous cells, helping to eliminate them naturally.

  • Modulating Intracellular Signaling Pathways – These compounds influence key cellular pathways involved in tumor growth, suppressing the ability of cancer cells to multiply and spread.

  • Exhibiting Cytotoxicity Against Cancer Cell Lines – Research indicates that alkaloids from goldenseal have cytotoxic effects on various cancer cell lines, making it a promising natural anticancer agent.

Ways to Consume Goldenseal

There are numerous ways that Goldenseal can be taken, depending on personal preference and health conditions:

  • Tea: Step Goldenseal root in hot water and consume as an herbal tea. If you don’t like the taste, add another tea with it to mask or add to the flavor. (avoid adding dairy)

  • Capsules/Tablets: Using standardized extracts, which are available in supplement form, makes dosing easy.

  • Tinctures: The goldenseal tincture does have a strong taste. Liquid extracts of goldenseal are easily added to water or can be taken directly under the tongue for rapid absorption. Some people use goldenseal tinctures for eardrops for earaches.

  • Powder: The powdered root is my favorite. It’s available online and can be mixed into smoothies or warm beverages. Very small amounts (1/16 tsp or less) can also be inhaled through the nostrils, one at a time, up to three times a day. Good for sinus flare ups and ear infections too.

  • Topical Application: Goldenseal is sometimes used externally to support skin health and wound healing, though its anticancer properties are best utilized internally.

When Not to Use Goldenseal

While goldenseal offers numerous health benefits, it is crucial to use it appropriately, particularly for cancer patients undergoing conventional treatments:

  • During Chemotherapy: Goldenseal may interfere with chemotherapy drugs by affecting liver enzymes that metabolize medications. Always consult with a healthcare provider before use.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The alkaloids in goldenseal can affect uterine contractions and are not recommended for women pregnant or nursing.

  • Liver or Kidney Disease: Since goldenseal influences liver enzyme activity, those with compromised liver or kidney function should use goldenseal with caution.

  • Long-Term Use: Goldenseal should not be taken continuously for extended periods, as it may impact gut flora and liver function. It is best used in cycles or under professional supervision.

Conclusion

Goldenseal is a promising natural remedy with strong anticancer properties. Its alkaloids can inhibit cancer cell growth, induce apoptosis, and disrupt crucial pathways involved in tumor progression. However, cancer patients—especially those undergoing chemotherapy—should exercise caution and consult their healthcare provider before incorporating goldenseal into their regimen. With proper guidance, goldenseal may serve as a powerful complementary tool in the fight against cancer.
